Inside the problem

How it works

Rehab after surgery follows your surgeon's protocol, whether the operation is on the knee, hip, shoulder or spine. Illustration: Gray's Anatomy (public domain).

Surgery is only part of the result. How strong and mobile you are going in, and how well your rehab goes afterwards, make a big difference to how quickly you get back to normal life. We work to your surgeon's protocol and adapt it to you.

In more detail

Common problems explained

What each one is, what it feels like and how we manage it.

Before surgery: prehab

Building strength and movement before an operation can make early recovery easier. We assess you, teach the exercises you will need afterwards, and discuss what to expect in hospital and the first weeks.

Knee and hip replacement rehab

After a joint replacement, we focus on controlling swelling and pain, regaining range of motion and walking, then building strength. We follow your surgeon's instructions on weight-bearing and movement limits.

ACL reconstruction rehab

Rehab after an ACL reconstruction is long and staged, over many months. We use strength and hop testing so that decisions on running and return to sport are based on measurements, not just the calendar.

Shoulder and rotator cuff surgery rehab

After shoulder surgery the repair needs protection, then gradual movement and strengthening. We follow the timeline your surgeon sets, and progress when the repair allows.

How we help

Our four-step approach

Every plan is built around your problem, your work and your goals.

1

Assess

Before surgery we check your strength and movement, and set up the exercises that help you recover faster.

2

Explain

You'll know what to expect in the first days and weeks, and what your surgeon's protocol means in practice.

3

Treat

After surgery we work to your surgeon's protocol: control swelling and pain and get movement back safely.

4

Rebuild

Progressive strengthening and testing, so you return to work, sport and daily life with confidence.

Strength testing helps us check your recovery objectively.

When to see a doctor first. Contact your surgeon or doctor promptly if you have a fever, a wound that is red, hot or leaking, a swollen and painful calf, chest pain or shortness of breath. Call 000 in an emergency.

Questions

Before you book

When should I start physio before surgery?

As early as you can. Even a few weeks of targeted strengthening before surgery can make early recovery easier.

Do you follow my surgeon's protocol?

Yes. Bring your surgeon's instructions and operation report, and we will work to them.

Can I claim on my health fund or WorkCover?

Often yes. If your extras cover includes physio you can claim with HICAPS, and WorkCover and CTP claims are covered when approved. Tell us when you book.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first appointment is 60 minutes, so there is time for a thorough assessment. We assess the problem, explain what is going on, start treatment and give you a clear plan. No referral needed.

Can I claim on my health fund?

Yes. If your extras cover includes physio, you can claim on the spot with HICAPS and only pay the gap. We also see Medicare care plan, WorkCover, CTP, DVA and NDIS patients.
