Headaches and Physiotherapy

The occasional headache or migraine can be simply a part of life, but a regular, or predictable headache or migraine can be debilitating and is a true frustration. Many people who suffer from frequent headaches have put up with them for so long that it becomes normalised, and are not aware of impact it has on their lives, or what symptoms are and aren’t normal.

Most commonly overlooked and dismissed symptoms are the weekly or “two-to-three times a week” headaches and constant low-grade pressure around the head. These low-grade headaches will tend to “flare-up” once or twice a month, and only then does it become bad enough to take a day off work, lie down in a dark room, or take medication.

Headaches and migraines can cause multiple areas of pain or even a single area of pain, and often worse on one side of the head/face than the other; common areas of pain include behind the eyes, around the sides of the head and temples, over the top of the head, in the sinuses, around or in the ear, at the base of the skull, and even along the jaw. These symptoms will usually follow a pattern, and not always a simple pattern either; for example, some headaches are on the face with certain triggers (smells, sounds, certain foods), different quality (sharp, dull ache) with a different time of day, or even starting from a different part of the head if you slept poorly the night before!

Unravelling the cause of your headache can be a headache in itself and it is not uncommon for many people to plan their routines around their headaches, and become avoidant of activities which may trigger symptoms. Assessment and treatment with a physiotherapist trained in headache and migraine management can significantly reduce the impact that your symptoms have on your life. Physiotherapy treatment of headaches and migraines aims to alleviate your symptoms, and get you self-sufficient in keeping your symptoms to a minimum as soon as possible.
